More and more practitioners are looking to augment their services with additional tools, and with new studies coming out regarding non-invasive technologies, all signs are pointing to advanced regenerative therapies. In this month’s patient success story, CuraMedix showcases a dedicated chiropractor who combines his adjustment expertise with radial pressure wave (EPAT), focused shockwave (ESWT), and EMTT to deliver astounding results.
Physician Background: A Whole-Body Vibrational Approach
For 34 years, Dr. Perry Cammisa, D.C., has been shaking up the chiropractic industry with his advanced, innovative approach to whole-body vibrational therapy. He is a true innovator when it comes to his armamentarium: whole body vibrational technology, radial pressure wave (EPAT), focused shockwave (ESWT), and Magnetotransduction (EMTT), to name a few. He has a sterile lab on-site at his facility, and partners with other physicians to bring expanded treatment capabilities to many of his patients.
Challenges: A Busy Mom of Ten Suffering From Chronic Back Pain
Victoria F., 54, spent most of her adult life looking after others. She spent a decade in the profession of nursing, and with ten children to look after, she rarely had time for herself. Several years ago, Victoria had a nasty fall and ended up with two compression fractures in her lumbar spine, and was diagnosed with sciatica and chronic lower back pain. She tried laser therapy, physical therapy, and chiropractic therapy to treat her symptoms, but the discomfort persisted.
Desperate for a solution, she turned to Dr. Cammisa for help. He set to work immediately with a structural assessment, performing a vestibular test to see how her brain communicated with the rest of her body, and following up with a postural examination to determine any biomechanical problems.
Dr. Cammisa confirmed Victoria’s previous diagnosis of sciatica on her right side, but also found several other problems. He diagnosed her with biomechanical dysfunction at L4 and L5, in addition to a hypermobile segment at L5, a degenerative disk between L5 and S1, and improper joint positioning between L2 and L3, where the joint sat in a flexed position when it should have been extended.
Solution: A Combined Approach Using Radial Pressure Wave, Focused Shockwave, and EMTT
Dr. Cammisa’s unique treatment timeline consists of patients coming to him 3 times a week for around 12 weeks. However, due to Victoria’s busy and ever-changing schedule, she was treated for 2 weeks, followed by a one-month gap, then another 6 weeks consecutively.
Dr. Cammisa used an array of different devices and technologies to address Victoria’s pathologies. He looked at her conditions from a mechanical perspective, using artificial intelligence, shockwave therapy, and Magnetotransduction to diagnose and treat her infirmities from multiple directions.
Here is Dr. Cammisa’s approach to treating Victoria:
Treatment Part 1: Ultrasound of Lumbar Spine
- Dr. Cammisa performed an ultrasound of Victoria’s lumbar spine to determine the exact location of her joints, vertebral segments, and laminae. He then marked these locations on Victoria’s skin to ensure he would be treating in the right place when adjusting her spine, and when using EPAT, ESWT, and EMTT technologies.
Treatment Part 2: Spinal Adjustment and Physical Therapy
- Dr. Cammisa used the Impulse IQ Adjusting Instrument to adjust Victoria’s spine. Inside the device, a sensor detects the frequency of each specific vertebrae to improve the mechanics and motion of the individual joints.
- Victoria also performed spinal stability exercises on their physical therapy floor, including vibration therapy on Theraplates.
Treatment Part 3: Radial Pressure Wave (EPAT)
- The Impulse IQ device allowed Dr. Cammisa to learn the frequency of Victoria’s bones – between 4 and 12 hz, so he was able to set the radial pressure wave device for the correct frequency – 10 hz.
- Using the S20 tip and all three spinal tips, he set the intensity for 1.0-2.5 mJ based on patient tolerance, and performed 2,000-3,000 pulses per treatment session.
Treatment Part 4: Focused Shockwave (ESWT)
- Using no standoff, Dr. Cammisa set the frequency of the focused shockwave device to 8 hz, the intensity for 0.10-0.15 mJ depending on patient comfort, and performed 2,500 pulses to the impacted sites (L4, L5, S1, and the SI joint – focused mainly on the patient’s right side).
Treatment Part 5: Magnetotransduction (EMTT)
- Dr. Cammisa set the EMTT device between level 6 and 7 at 10hz, and performed 6,000 pulses to the impacted site.
Clinical Outcome and Benefits Achieved
The pictures say it all, showcasing the change in angles in Victoria’s spinal column and the change in values between her lateral lumbar spinal segments, as well as the change in mobility values during flexion and extension.
For example, her extension values between L2 and L3 changed from 0.2 degrees in March, to -9.0 degrees in July. When looking at the image of the complete spine side-by-side, one can notice the difference in her spinal posture – noting how much closer it lines up with the reference points (yellow dots) between curves in the spine.
The artificial intelligence program that Dr. Cammisa uses is exemplified in image #3, where the most dramatic changes in values are highlighted in red circles. Specifically, between L2 and L3, there is a remarkable difference as it correlates to the posterior longitudinal ligament. Although L2 and L3 are the most notable, there are also significant improvements in every other area that was measured.
Dr. Cammisa reports, “I did what I could, and shockwave took care of the rest. These fast, impressive results would not have happened if it weren't for radial pressure wave, focused shockwave, and Magnetotransduction.”
Victoria is doing exceptionally well now, and still comes in to see Dr. Cammisa to ensure she stays comfortable and flexible. She has more energy and maneuverability when it comes to wrangling her ten children, and she finds it easier to perform day-to-day tasks without aches and pains interrupting her daily responsibilities.
